A message from our Executive Director
This time of the year always brings out the angels among us who step forward to support ACLDs mission through our Year End Appeal. The ACLD Foundation relies on the support of donors like you, for projects, initiatives and items for which no other funding exists. One of these vital items we have identified are generators for our residences. OPWDD does not currently fund generators for our existing homes but we at ACLD understand the importance of having one as we continue to experience stronger storms.
Electricity in an ACLD residence can mean the difference between an insulin-dependent Type I Diabetic resident receiving their temperature-controlled medication, and not; It can be the difference between a resident remaining calm and collected during loud storms with the help of a sound machine, and being left without, to experience the fear and discomfort magnified with every boom and tremor. With our climate experiencing unprecedented and dangerous shifts, we have seen these storms at a more frequent rate, and are projected to continue. Just last year, Tropical Storm Isaias hit our shores, amid a global pandemic, leaving more than 400,000 homes and businesses on Long Island without power, some for up to a week. Some of our homes are already equipped with generators, and the agency does have a few portable generators that are given out on a priority basis. However, if we have learned anything from the last 19 months, it is that we need to be prepared for anything—We need to find the light in the darkness.
Be that light for ACLD. The funds collected for our new Generator Campaign will provide generators for homes, based on a priority list.
