Annual Campaign

The ACLD Foundation’s Year End Appeal is a great way for supporters to make an annual gift or holiday-time gift. With levels of giving to fit any budget, your support is helping to provide an enviable life for the more than 3,000 children and adults supported by ACLD each day.

A message from our Executive Director

Food donations at ACLD’s Plainview community residence in April 2020

Six years ago, when I first came to ACLD, fundraising was used to support a specific house, or cause. When the ACLD Foundation was created in 2016, we helped to shift the culture of philanthropy to be one of global support of the agency – to direct funds where they are needed most. By building new relationships in the community and business world, ACLD has strengthened its core of community supporters while maintaining a solid base of family support.

In all my years in the field, I have never seen a year that has challenged us in so many ways. From the immediate crisis of the early days of the pandemic, to the reopening of the programs, to the financial impact across the agency’s programs and services, we have met each challenge head on. But we need your help to ensure we can overcome the impact of the pandemic on ACLD.

At the height of the pandemic, with more than half of our 41 homes with cases of COVID-19, we took proactive measures to develop an intensive Respite Center in Bethpage-the only one in our region of New York City and Long Island. The Center was established to meet the needs of those who were diagnosed with COVID-19 but did not require hospitalization.  ACLD also took other measures to safeguard residents and plan for reopening of programs including obtaining personal protective equipment, antibody testing for residents, implementing new procedures for temperature screening, sanitizing procedures across all residences and offices, all contributing to unbudgeted expenses. Despite the mounting expenses, we value our staff so much that we did not lay off a single person. We restructured positions and ensured that anyone who wished to continue with ACLD, remained employed.

As we continue to navigate this pandemic, we know more State-level cuts are being proposed. The State has proposed a 20% holdback of payments that would impact ACLD programs; it is still unclear if these cuts are temporary. The need for unrestricted funds is more important now than it ever has been. We realize these past several months have been difficult for everyone and we ask, if you are in a position to do so, please consider donating to the ACLD Foundation.  ACLD is the sole recipient of the funds the Foundation raises. Any funds the Foundation spends, requires approval by both the ACLD Board of Trustees, and the ACLD Foundation Board, ensuring your hard-earned money will assist us in carrying out our mission.

We are grateful to those of you who have continued to make contributions to support our mission. Please consider making a donation to the ACLD Foundation at www.acld.org, or by texting the word ACLD to 44-321. You can also mail your check, made payable to the ACLD Foundation, 807 S. Oyster Bay Road, Bethpage NY 11714. If your company offers matching gift options, this is another great way to make an even greater impact for ACLD.

With the help of loyal supporters like you, we know ACLD will come back stronger than ever to continue to meet the needs of children and adults across Long Island.

Sincerely,

Robert C. Goldsmith
