Be an Advocate for People with Developmental Disabilities

ACLD is committed to providing the highest quality of supports and services to people with disabilities on Long Island.  In our work, we sometimes face obstacles that threaten to reduce or change our ability to do that.  We are committed to facing these obstacles and doing our best to preserve services and meet our mission.  We can not do this alone and are calling on each of you to help.

Call the Governor and Your State Legislators to Advocate on Minimum Wage

The Governor's proposed budget contains an increase to the state's minimum wage.  The proposal does not include necessary public funds to support the minimum wage increases for Direct Support Professionals, special education staff and other low wage workers whose rate is set by the State.  We, at ACLD firmly believe staff who support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities deserve wage increases; though funds needs to accompany state mandated increases.

What Can You Do?:
Call and/or write the Governor, your State Senator and your State Assemblymember this week and let them know!

The message is simple:
We support increases to the State's minimum wage and respectfully urge Governor Cuomo to fund the Executive Budget proposal.  Funding is critical to the health, safety and well-being of people with I/DD, health issues and other disabilities. It is the right thing for our dedicated and caring workforce.

Share your message:
Call the Governor's Office at (518)-474-1041 and press 3 to speak to an assistant.

Call the State Senate switchboard at (518)-455-2800 and ask for your Senator.  If you don't know who your Senator is, please go to the Senate's website at and use the Senator locator.  Please urge your Senator to call the Governor to support funding in the 30-day budget
amendments for the minimum wage.

Call the Assemby switchboard at (518)-455-4100 and ask for your Assemblymember.  If you don't know who your Assemblymember is, please go to the Assembly website at
