A Message to Our Staff-
This past week has left all of us reeling with a wide range of emotions after seeing the senseless tragedy of George Floyd’s murder. It has left us all feeling outraged and sad that this is not an isolated incident, and for many in our community, it is far too common. We do not want our staff to think that we stand silently by, complicit as these issues of racism and inequality rise up all around us. What we saw transpire in Minnesota is not who we are as a country, or as an agency. We do not condone violence of any kind and we stand in solidarity with those who promote equality, justice and human dignity for all.
We want you to know that we hear you; we value each and every one of our staff and we are here to support you. We will work together against the racism and inequality that have long plagued you.
Diversity and inclusion have always been core values at ACLD, for the people we support and our staff, and we are committed to starting a new conversation on these critical issues. As part of this ongoing dialogue, we will be forming a diverse workforce group that will collaborate to develop forums on these issues. In addition, this group will establish a fundraiser that will benefit carefully vetted charities that support equality and justice reform. We invite you to share suggestions on charities that you think should be considered.
These emotion-filled times have also left us with a sense of hurt, anger and sadness. Your mental health is important to us and we encourage you to use our EAP support system to speak to someone about how you are feeling.
It is times like this where we must reflect on how we can make our corner of the world better and more just. Challenging injustices when we see them, learning about each other’s lived experiences, actively listening to each other will help us to build a better climate of inclusion across all of our communities and unite us. We may not have all the answers, but we are here to start the conversation and listen to what you have to say.
We have always prided ourselves on being a family here at ACLD and we want you to know that we make this commitment to each of you: to keep doing the hard work needed to progress and to continue to move forward together.
